Class Final Projects.

The posts have really picked up. Everybody is doing it. It is not quite the same as the face-to-face class but I am really enjoying your commenta. As Nadia Lopez would say everyone is a winner. However, I am offering a prize for the most discussion posts. Last time I looked Maya was in the lead but her advantage is not great and anyone can catch up. You can post as often as you want. It doesn't matter if you are up early like me or up late you can post. Courtesy of the admissions office i have a cool t-shirt and water bottle to go with the certificate of achievement for being the color bold student with the most posts. Have some fun, Will

Papers 1-6 are all late at this point. The last day to submit them is April 15.

Final Project

Complicit: One of the themes of this class is that while many, perhaps most people, are not white supremacists or overt racists we are often complicit in that we allow such behavior to continue without speaking up in opposition. It's said better than I could in the following quotes:

"We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people."
--Martin Luther King Jr.

"The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."
--Albert Einstein

"If the society today allows wrongs to go unchallenged, the impression is created that those wrongs have the approval of the majority."
--Barbara Jordan

Racial Microaggressions are insults, indignities, and marginalizing messages sent by well-meaning people unaware of the hidden messages. They have generated considerable research in professional journals as explanations for some of the harmful effects of racism.

Some references for those interested in the subject are below:

Racial Microaggressions in Everyday Life article from American Psychologist

Atlantic Monthly article. This is an example of a criticism of the idea that there are microaggressions and that they might cause harm.

The reasons (so many were denied basic rights) are deeply embedded in history and tradition and the nature of man. We can understand—without rancor or hatred—how this all happened. But it cannot continue. Our Constitution, the foundation of our republic, forbids it. The principles of freedom forbid it. Morality forbids it. And the law I will sign tonight forbids it.   –LBJ on signing the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

The Microaggressions Project.

Mellody Hobson video

It is not required but I recommend that all members of our Microaggressions group take the RACE Implicit Association Test. It should take 20-30 minutes. Keep the results of your test; you will not be asked to reveal the results but we may use them anonymously.
