Course Description

AP Calculus AB Institute (Online this year)
June 22-26 and June 29-July 2, 2020 with pre-institute preparation in June 8-10

This institute targets mathematics teachers in public high schools in South Carolina who are currently teaching AP Calculus AB without AP endorsement, who will be teaching AP Calculus AB, and who are teaching "lead-in" courses to AP Calculus AB, such as Precalculus and Algebra III.

The major objective of this course is to inform mathematics teachers about the AP Calculus program and to certify that they are qualified to teach such a course. This endorsement involves demonstrations on the part of the participant that he/she has mastered the subject matter involved in AP Calculus AB and is aware of the techniques and technology involved in successfully teaching such a ourse.

Online pre-institute preparation will occur on June 8-10. The preparation days will involve online lecture videos, assignments, and collaboration with instructors and fellow teachers covering precalculus and introductory calculus topics.

The course would be held 9am-5pm on June 22-26 and June 29-July 2, 2020, with online pre-institute pretest and preparation sessions on June 8-10. The pretest and preparation sessions will review precalculus material using online instructional and assessment resources such as a calculus etextbook, WebAssign, DeltaMath, and Blackboard course management system which allows collaboration among participants. Content delivery should be concluded early so the remaining institute days can to be devoted to individual and group study for the final exam on the last day of the institute. Assignments will assist participants in the collection of documentation required for endorsement in the South Carolina.

The institute will be an intensive course that covers all topics covered in the updated Fall 2019 AP Calculus AB Course and Exam Description from College Board. Based upon past experience, extensive instruction in calculus content is needed for teachers since most have not studied calculus since undergraduate school, possibly decades ago. This institute informs teachers about the updated AP Calculus AB program and determines if they are qualified to teach such a course. This endorsement involves graded assignments, in-class group work and presentations, and a final exam which demonstrate that the participant has mastered the content in AP Calculus AB and is aware of the techniques and technology involved in successfully teaching such a course.
