The innermost circle represents the rotation of the Earth about its axis. Its single notch represents the single day.
The next innermost circle should really be drawn as an ellipse, for it represents the orbit of the Earth about the Sun. Its twelve sections represent the twelve months as the Earth travels through this orbit. This circle also represents the span of time of the year.
The third-innermost circle represents the orbit of Saturn, a span of time called a saturnium. Its single notch means that this orbit is not divided into twelfths, but is taken only as a whole.
The outermost circle represents the precession of the equinoxes. Its twelve sections represent the twelve ages, and the circle as a whole represents the cycle.
