We are covering a lot of material; regular attendance and reading of assignments will be critical to this being a worthwhile class and to earning a good grade. Class participation is essential to the success of the class and to your grade. Due to the nature of the material exams will be cumulative. Participation in class requires that students attend a self-help group conducted by a group leader. This individual is not part of the psychology department clinical faculty and will have no role in the student grades or progress through the master's program. He will only report attendance at group sessions. Attendance policy: The FMU catalog states: "It is the responsibility of the student to attend all scheduled meetings in the courses in which he/she is enrolled." Students missing more than two (2) classes (excused or unexcused) will be dropped from the class with a grade of NC or W. Make-up exams will be given to students with appropriate written excuses only on Dec 3, the last day of classes. Research Paper: Each of you will write a research paper on an aspect of group counseling and psychotherapy of interest to you. The paper needs to have a clear thesis or argument (NO OVERVIEWS). Thus, you should form an opinion on the subject and use library research and group experience to support that view. Papers should be written APA style which includes being typed double-spaced and thoroughly proofread. Papers should contain 5-8 pages of text. Your grade will focus primarily on your ability to develop and support a point of view. If necessary you may use one quote; otherwise you must paraphrase the finding when reporting research. For more information about the paper read the Insipid Overview on my web page. Late papers will not be tolerated and will be assessed a minimum of 10 points per class that they are late. Any exceptions must be approved by me in advance. All students must submit a certificate of completion for the Academic Integrity Tutorial Instructor: I am a native of Maine and earned a first B.A. in Economics at Tufts University and a B.A. in psychology from the University of Texas Austin. I received my Ph.D., in Clinical Psychology, from the University of South Carolina and completed an internship at Illinois State. Prior to arriving at Francis Marion, I taught at the University of Texas-Permian Basin, the University of Maryland-European and Asian Divisions and spent two years working as a clinical psychologist at Mid-Maine Medical Center in Waterville.
